All aboard now, I can’t stop dreaming of you In the clouds now, I see your stencil in blue Is it true that you’re here in the morning? Or are you just a dream that is calling? I do wish I could make some sense out of you How the light falls, and sticks like foliage to dew And the air warm, long before sun comes to view Is it true that you’re here in the morning? How do you bring light before dawning? I choose to wait here in the quiet where both can be true I have never seen an angel quite like you Your skin glows white as light falls into you In these moments between dreams, My eyelids droop and just the shape of you Bends forth in shadows barely clear to view Can we hide in hypnagogic bloom? Can we stay where reason doesn’t rule? I don’t need to know if what I see is false or if it’s true I only need it not to end so soon

My Father 05:13
To him you are a child, but you’re a father Abandoned by your own, adored by the mother To her you are a man, just like her father Abandoned by the motherland, find hope as a father From me you never ran, you only came closer You gave me all you can, and your pain went unspoken You learnt to be a man from a man who was broken From your love for us we know the ways that you have chosen I want to thank you, my father Please let me thank you, for loving us in ways he never could To me you are a friend, one I don’t know yet Gentle as a breeze, but deep as an ocean I want to know your mind and go where it wanders I want to run through time and find you when you were younger so I can say Thank you, my father (I could say it to you) Please let me thank you (I could say it to you) Please let me thank you Please let me thank you for loving us in ways he never could Tell me where the time goes Tell me where your mind goes… To him you are a child, but you’re a father Abandoned by your own, adored by the mother To her you are a man, just like her father Abandoned by the motherland, find hope as a father

Buzzing 04:37
I still remember the brass up to my lips The tightening of the diaphragm The spine upright like a soldier on the line I’d close my eyes and picture that first note And fix all of my worthiness of name On whether I could get it close And then the buzzing, the sound split through the air I’d scrunch my little fists to thigh And all I did was start to cry And then the ages where childhood was behind And now I’m kissing older boys And dreaming of a life that wasn’t mine I’d go to school and wear my pony high And tighten every lace and strap so I could have an alibi Both by the evening and the rising of the sun I crafted every inch of me so they could see I’d won The way it feeds me to see my mother smile How can I do enough so she sees herself in her child How can I hold you? I wish I could How can I tell you, oh sweet one, you’re doing good? I promise they saw you, just not how they should I promise I see you, and you’re doing good I promise I see you

My Lover 01:40
I don’t know if I could come back ‘Cause after all that, you know how I can crack Like an eggshell under your feet I have grown like roots from beneath I climb through the trees, ‘til all I can see Is the endless, endless light, so warm and bright Cover me, I want to be free Honour me, I want to be free Hold me, my lover is me Hold me, my lover is me My lover is me My lover, my lover My lover, I love her, I love her
5.
Good For Me 03:24
I don’t know you are good for me yet I just know it feels good with you on my chest You’re so pretty with your make-up on my bed Two years younger but always one step ahead I met you fighting for the world we want to make You thought I’d missed you, but I couldn’t look away Eyes filled with hope and fists raised up day after day And when you walked me home that day Sydenham Road was lined with lace I think you could tell better than anyone exactly how I feel I try to lie but there is nothing you can’t see I’ve wanted a love like this for years and now you’re here And so divine that I could cry, but somehow with me there is fear I don’t know if you are good for me yet My eyes are lazy from the sleep we cannot get My school books getting dusty on your bed Exam on Monday, all day Sunday we’re in bed I think you could tell better than anyone exactly how I feel I try to lie but there is nothing you can’t see I’ve wanted a love like this for years and now you’re here And so divine that I could cry, but somehow with me there is fear I’m sorry ‘bout the books you’ve lent I haven’t read yet I’m sorry ‘bout the mess I leave beside your bed I just want you to think I’m cute and clever I’m just not used to pretending that my shit’s together
6.
NYD 04:03
Holding myself for so long I can’t remember noticing when you’re gone You kept your phone on airplane mode Just ‘cause you warned me, it don’t mean the hurt won’t stay long I kept myself within arm’s reach of me So in a change of the breeze, I can walk back home in peace And wait until the rain leaves But on a Monday evening after work is done I can’t remember the faces of those I love I swear you kissed me with the power of the sun But evening has come and I don’t know where memory runs I walk around with a bounce in my step Because the loves that I get make me smile through my chest But somehow just in a number of days I’m scared it’s all gone away, must be the gloom of the holidays I must be brave ‘cause it’s the first day of the year And I’ll say I miss you my dear, but if I’m honest with the fear I know it’s me I’m really missing here And in the new year in the room I first made love With all the pictures of my life hanging above I feel a pain in places I can’t make sense of But I know I’ll find my way home before too long

about

Multi-talented Eora-based artist, Ella Haber's highly-anticipated upcoming EP, 'Moments Between Dreams’ is out 16 February via Soul Has No Tempo.

Written by Haber and co-produced with longtime collaborator, Yianni Adams (Kyoshi), the EP is a beautiful journey of discovery, the artist opening herself up into intimate new worlds both musical and emotional. A six-track record that follows Haber through a myriad of awakenings, the songs were all written and conceptualised on pianos in bedrooms. The intimacy and quietness of these spaces, combined with the emotional resonance of her treasured instrument, shaped the album's soft and close-knit atmosphere.

A treasured collection of songs that poured out in the warmer months of 2021-2022 with urgency and passion, Ella reflects: “I needed to release myself from my own numbness, isolation, inactivity and loneliness induced by successive lockdowns, a long-term relationship coming to a close and a disconnection from my own body and heart.”

“As soon as lockdown ended, I found new love, threw myself into activism and connected deeply with new friends for the first time in years. I felt a profound hope for the future, and I felt a restlessness to dive into the next chapter of my life with all senses open and alive with feeling.”

The record is a maturation in songwriting and production for Haber, a classically-trained pianist, trumpet player and vocalist, beginning her musical training at just 5 years of age. A stunning follow-up to her 2019 debut ‘Clay’, which received critical acclaim and support both home and abroad, ‘Moments Between Dreams’ displays a bare honesty and vulnerability in both songwriting and production with Ella taking the lead in creating the soundscapes and arrangements to accompany the stories. “It represents a maturation in songwriting and production for me as an artist. I feel the scope of my songwriting has expanded significantly on this record, much past the confines of Clay. The record draws from folk, indie, pop and rock but still to me is founded in the bedrock of soul and jazz.“

Completing production across 3 years via lockdown Zooms and in Yianni’s studio, the pair then called upon the expertise of producer/engineer extraordinaire Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote, Danika Smith, Hannah Macklin, Miss Kaninna) to engineer, mix and master the record. Label manager Gavin Boyd adds “Nick has a proven track record of creating very special dream-like worlds and sonic landscapes through his engineering and recording techniques - bringing a unique life and soul to songs. Engaging him to add the final touches to Ella’s stories was a no-brainer for us”

The lead single, 'My Father' sets the tone for the EP, delving into themes of familial love. Dedicated to her dad, ‘My Father’ is a tender tribute and acknowledgment - how we can overcome intergenerational trauma to show up with boundless and unconditional love for our families. A testament to her ability to convey profound emotions through her music, she compliments the song with a delicate arrangement of strings and a chanting choir that builds an emotive foundation beneath her soulful vocals, supported by a groove-driven live sound and vintage drum tones.

Since the 2019 release of her debut EP ‘Clay’, Ella has reinforced her ability to communicate and forge connections through her music, imbuing her live performances with a spellbinding magic. Earning recognition from UK tastemakers, Ella was the sole representative from Sydney invited to perform at Gilles Peterson's inaugural ‘We Out Here’ festival in London. Her talent was further highlighted when Jamz Supernova (BBC 1XTRA/Future Bounce) selected her for an exclusive London headline showcase alongside Soul Has No Tempo label-mate Tiana Khasi.

She has become an in-demand support act for esteemed internationals, recently opening for Emma-Jean Thackeray, Kamaal Williams, Julien Dyne & Lord Echo (Aotearoa), and local legends, Surprise Chef and Ngaiire. As part of Vivid's 2023 program, Ella played the prestigious Sydney Opera House, supporting jazz phenom Alfa Mist and the improv wizards, Swooping.

In a genre and society where identity faces increasing scrutiny, Ella strives to carve out a space for reclamation and self-celebration through music. 'Moments Between Dreams' represents a refined and evolved expression of her artistry.
